Jaguar isn't interested in leaving history in the past. Instead, the automaker is doing quite the opposite with the release of its first-ever limited edition F-PACE.

Jaguar F Pace Svr Edition 1988 1

The all-new F-PACE SVR Edition 1988 pays homage to the brand's storied success on the track, taking direct inspiration from the winning Jaguar XJR-9 at 1988 World Sports-Prototype Championship, most famously with Jan Lammers, Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace behind the wheel to win Le Mans that year.

It's a collectors' item through and through with just 394 examples available globally, and while what's under the hood of this rare beast isn't to be ignored--the 550PS 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine can go 0-100km/h in 4 seconds and hit speeds of 286km/h--it's the design that steals the show.

The high-performance SUV has been done in a striking glossy berry hue known as Midnight Amethyst, a brand new color for Jaguar that is only available to Edition 1988 customers.

"The Midnight Amethyst Gloss paintwork appears black until its amethyst undertones are revealed in bright sunshine, emphasizing the SVR's dynamic exterior," Richard Woolley, creative director of Special Vehicle Operations at Jaguar, said in a release. "To achieve this dramatic Ultra Metallic Gloss finish, we assessed more than 40 variations to create the desired depth of colour."

Other unique aesthetic features of the Edition 1988 include a laser-etched Edition 1988 logo on each front wing panel, a tailgate featuring Sunset Gold Satin Jaguar script and touches of Gloss Black finishings on places like the brake calipers, wheel centre caps and door mirror caps. The upholstery has been crafted from semi-aniline Ebony leather and interior components, including the dashboard, steering wheel spokes, gear shift paddles and seats, are highlighted with Sunset Gold Satin detailing.

There's even a sliding panoramic roof. This exclusive Jag has been a labour of love, one that has involved several different departments at the automotive maker's HQ.

"Edition 1988 started with our SV Bespoke and Jaguar Design teams taking inspiration from the iconic liveries of Jaguar's race-winning sports cars," says Mark Wilkes, Director of Vehicle Personalization at Jaguar. "The result is a winning combination of colours, textures and features that celebrates sporting success while making the F-PACE SVR even more appealing."Customers can expect nothing less than a high performance experience behind the wheel, but the Edition 1988 is still very much meant to be used for everyday excursions. Comfort was top of mind during the design process and as such, it has been outfitted with the latest technology including Jaguar's Pivi Pro infotainment system and wireless device charging stations. While the world has evolved since the XJR-9's iconic performance in 1988, its victories won't soon be forgotten, especially now that 394 people are able to add the limited edition F-PACE SVR Edition 1988 to their collection.
